Imagine a day with no notifications, no traffic and no city lights, just open sky, jungle sounds and towering limestone cliffs rising straight out of the water. Cheow Lan Lake, deep inside Khao Sok National Park, is one of the most spectacular natural places in Thailand, and much of it has no phone signal or internet at all.
The lake was created when a valley was flooded during the construction of a dam. Beneath its emerald and turquoise surface lie traces of former villages and buildings, which gives the place a quietly mysterious feel. Gliding between islets and forested peaks by longtail boat is the highlight of the day.
Along the way you also stop at the famous Samet Nangshe viewpoint in Phang Nga and visit a Buddhist temple.
Expect little or no mobile coverage around the lake. Shoulders and knees should be covered when visiting the temple. The drive is long, so the day starts early and finishes in the evening.
