EPHESUS
The ancient city of Ephesus holds many fascinating and valuable archaeological treasures, such as the Temple of Artemis, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Other notable monuments include the Temple of Hadrian, the Library of Celsus, and the impressively large ancient amphitheater. The great theater of Ephesus could hold up to 24,000 people at once. Recent excavations have revealed that two more ancient cities lie buried beneath the current site. This makes Ephesus the third city built on the same platform, with a history dating back to 245 BC. Legend has it that the first city was founded by female warriors known as the Amazons. The city witnessed the Ionians and the Persians over the centuries, and when the Romans took over the city in 129 BC, it was home to a population of 200,000. Ephesus soon became an important center of trade and commerce in the ancient world. From the first century AD onward, Ephesus also saw Christian disciples visiting the site to spread the belief in one God. Legend says that Saint Paul stayed here for three years, and that Saint John and the Virgin Mary visited this place in their final days.
