Thailand's grandest temples and palaces are scattered across the whole country, but on this day trip from Pattaya you can see a remarkable collection of them in just a few hours, finishing with a sunset over the Gulf of Thailand.
The journey begins at the Erawan Museum in Samut Prakan, crowned by a colossal three-headed elephant cast from 250 tonnes of bronze and standing 29 metres tall. Inside, ornate halls illustrate the Thai vision of the universe, while the surrounding garden is dotted with sculptures and canals. Next comes Muang Boran, or Ancient Siam, a vast open-air museum shaped like the map of Thailand. More than a hundred landmarks are recreated here, some full size and some scaled down, each placed according to the location of the original. Its highlight is a replica of the UNESCO-listed Khmer temple of Preah Vihear.
The evening ends at Wat Hong Thong, a striking temple built on stilts above the sea and reached by a glass bridge.
