Isan, Thailand's vast northeastern region, sees only a fraction of the country's visitors, yet it holds some of its richest history and boldest flavours. This two-day small-group adventure takes you far from Pattaya's beaches into a land of Khmer ruins, sacred temples, jungle-clad cliffs and village traditions.
The highlight is Prasat Phanom Rung, a 12th-century Khmer sanctuary crowning an extinct volcano. Once one of the most important cities of the Khmer Empire outside Angkor, and for a time regarded as its chief city, it survives in remarkable condition and impresses even travellers who have already seen Cambodia's temples. From the summit, the plains of Isan stretch to the horizon.
Along the way you will sample authentic Isan dishes you simply cannot find in Pattaya and learn about the customs and everyday life of the people who call this region home.
